Chapter Fourteen

It’s only been one month since I left, but coming back to this house feels like I could stay away forever and not miss it one bit.

The scent alone carries so many dark memories that smack me in the face all at once. “In here,” Mom hollers from the sitting room.

I don’t even bother taking my shoes off. I won’t be staying long. Mom called twice today threatening to cancel my cards and phone if I didn’t come home and handle things for school. I’m not sure when she started caring so much, but I can’t help but wonder why she does.

“Hey, Mom,” I say casually, like she’s a friend I came to have morning coffee with.

She sets her e-reader down beside her, uncrosses her legs, and pulls off her reading glasses. Still looking as young and proper as she has since I was a kid. One look at me and her mother-stare returns with a vengeance. “Your books and assignments are on the kitchen table. Laptop is in your room. I expect all your work to be completed by the end of the semester.”

Turning to walk away, I mumble under my breath, “Good to see you, too.”

One month. I’ve been gone an entire month and she greets me in the same manner she’d greet the mailman when he comes to pick up a package.

The rich kids in this town might have a lot of problems, but outsiders often forget the way we are raised. Lack of love and affection can lead even a saint into darkness.

I go into the kitchen and scoop up the stack of books that are topped with about fifty sheets of paper. It’ll take me at least a month just to look through all of this. How in the hell am I supposed to get all this work done in two months? I sigh heavily, then carry the books up to my room to pack a few more things.

Mom gave the okay for me to leave again. Not that she could really stop me. Even if she threatened to take everything away, I’d still leave. There is just no way I can stay in this town, feeling like everyone is breathing down my neck. I might be tough, but my conscience gets the best of me when I’m forced to lie. Not to mention, there are so many people here who are suspicious and most of whom can't stand me. Don’t really blame them. I did what I had to do to protect myself, even if it was at the expense of others.

Trying to spend as little time in my room as possible, I pack up a bag and head back downstairs. Mom’s waiting at the bottom of the steps, tirelessly. As if she’s been waiting there this entire time. “You’ll call when you get to Lisa’s?” she asks, in a surprisingly mellow tone.

I give her a side-eye and raise a brow. “It’s Aunt Lisa. And, sure. If you want me to.”

My mom and her sister aren’t exactly close.
